I advance my calendar every day, but none is so satisfying as when we go from December 31st to January 1st. I swing that magnetic ball on a string slowly back to the beginning – January, and place the other ball on “1.”  It begins its 365 day trek all over again.

I gave away the operating method of the calendar above, I’m sure, but you would be surprised how many look at it and ask, “How does it operate?” In a technological world this calendar is the lowest of low tech. Perhaps its futuristic design tricks you into believing there must be some mysterious way it moves through the year. No. Just me.

At this lame attempt at a New Year’s blog, I’ll add one story that always comes to mind this time each year. “Dick & Jane” readers were how I learned to read many years ago. The only story I remember was about a character named Nancy. She was one of the gang in her neighborhood and I was as upset as her friends when Nancy announced she was moving. The friends were upset to see her go and threw a beautiful going away party for her. The following day the moving truck backs up to Nancy’s house and loads everything as her friends watch with sad faces. Then it drives two doors down on the same block and carries it all into her new home.

I’ll never forget the feeling of relief, though I realized Nancy had taken advantage of her friends a little. Everyone had enjoyed a wonderful party and good wishes among friends, the move had come and gone, and nothing important was going to change all that much—kind of like the new year. Have a happy one and visit me often in the same old neighborhood.

In lieu of destined-to-fail resolutions I like to try new things in the new year. It seems fitting. So today I picked up one of the strange packages at the Publix counter where the Japanese man who makes them all day every day assured me it would be very good. Yes, I am the one person in America who has not tried sushi. WAS the one person in America.

What a way to start the new year! I chose California roll with brown rice. There was (artificial) crab meat, cucumber, avocado, seaweed and heaven. The green sauce (wasabi?) was bracing and I loved the slivers of ginger.

Okay, is this a better way to start the year than flagellating myself for things I never really intend to do? Finding new sushi restaurants I can do. Maybe that is as close to a resolution as I can get.

Before watching Wild Hogs on TV tonight I had no New Year’s resolutions. Now I do. Number one is: “Slap a bull on his backside.” Until that is done, I won’t think of improving in other areas. If I show up no better a year from now, you’ll understand.

pic0011.jpgtree04-0091.jpgI am not ready to throw the Christmas tree to the curb, but we’ll have no choice in a few days. We bought our first live tree in many years — just for one year —  I thought. Jerry has been disappointed in our slim, artificial tree since the first year. It looked beautiful, took little space (and lots of ornaments) and snuggled up in a box demanding nothing when the season came to a close each year. Yet I came upon Jerry at his workbench the other day with a truncated section of this very tree, his clippers mutilating the lights. Dr. Frankenstein was driving a stake through the heart of the tree getting ready to discard it. I rescued that part and hope the other two are in tact somewhere.

I’ll admit the live one is amazing, green, fresh and fragrant, but it has to come down without procrastination. This in the house of a family who once left a tree up until Good Friday. No leaves are dropping and drooping is minimal, but there is the safety factor. The battery in the smoke detector began beeping its demise yesterday. The tree has to go. I don’t think I’m ready. Maybe I’m not ready for any of them to go. Maybe I have an issue with endings. But beginnings, that’s another story. A new year? Bring it on!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Note: In case it is not obvious, the live tree is on the left above, artificial on right.
